Today, let’s hear from the three gentlemen who are ICHEI Fellows in Chicago, Illinois and Wilmington, Delaware.
“We are very appreciative of this opportunity given to us by the Marriott Foundation to develop our professional knowledge, skills and abilities at DePaul University of Chicago. Chicago is truly a living laboratory for the hospitality student, and DePaul is right in the heart of it all. It’s within walking distance of a global hospitality headquarters, award-winning restaurants, five-star hotels, premier convention facilities and distinctive spas. This access to the industry enables us to witness how successful and prominent hospitality is within the city and the region. We are in the process of taking a variety of hospitality and professional development courses at DePaul. Dr. Nicholas Thomas (Dr. Nick), our mentor, is encouraging us to get involved in departmental and college-level committee meetings to get a better understanding of the concepts of faculty governance.Although we’ve only been here for two weeks, we’ve been very busy. Dr. Nick is very nice and is there to assist us with whatever we need personally and professionally. The other faculty and staff in the School of Hospitality Leadership at DePaul have also welcomed us with open arms. They are like a family.
All in all, we are so thrilled to be atDePaul University. Without the generous support of the Marriott Foundation and the CHEI program, none of this would have been possible. ”

Time flies and I have been here for two weeks already. The integration of different cultures, the spirit of freedom, the attitude of learning and teaching has deeply touched me. This historic university is located in a quiet town where there are no high-rise buildings, but there is a culture of diversity.
My mentor, Professor Sheryl Kline is not only knowledgeable, but also good at studying and experimenting with different teaching methods. Other professors also gave me great help. I observed some lecture courses including: hotel industry introduction, information technology in hotel industry and hotel engineering management. Although China also has these courses being involved in all of these teaching activities gives me are freshing feeling.
Many of the school’s hotel management courses are based on the Courtyard by Marriott brand. The students have a lot of in the hotel. In these courses, students are brave to raise their hands and actively speak which has had a great impression on me. I hope that through future participation in various teaching activities, I will improve my own ability and better serve my students after returning to China.
